Every so often, its important to get back to the basics. Especially since we've had some new faces lately, let's spend April talking about the roots of Traditional Western Herbalism (TWH) and the principles of constitutional medicine on which it is based.

When the system of Greek Classical medicine was created, matter was divided into four elements - air, water, earth and fire. From those four elements, our entire modern categorical use of the plant was founded. But beyond just the six tissue states and the energetic principles of herbs, there is a whole different part of the treatment process that can still be brought back to those original four elements. This is constitutional medicine - assessing the whole person in terms of air, water, earth and fire.
